On-Page SEO Checklist: How to Optimise Every Page for Google in 2026

Quick answer

On-page SEO makes each page clearly about one topic and genuinely the best answer for it. Check that the title tag and H1 contain the main keyword naturally, the meta description earns the click, headings follow the questions searchers ask, the content answers them fully with original detail, internal links connect related pages, images are compressed with descriptive alt text, structured data matches the page and the page loads fast on mobile.

Rankings are won one page at a time. On-page SEO is the part of SEO you fully control: making each page obviously about its topic, genuinely useful and easy for both people and search engines to understand. Use this checklist on every important page, starting with the ones closest to revenue.

Before you start: what is this page's one job?

Each page should target one main topic and one intent. Decide the main keyword and the questions the page must answer before you edit anything. Our keyword research guide shows how to choose them.

Titles and meta (checks 1 to 4)

  1. Title tag: main keyword near the start, around 50 to 60 characters, unique to the page.
  2. Meta description: around 140 to 160 characters that promise a clear benefit and invite the click.
  3. URL: short, readable and descriptive, such as /services/seo-services.
  4. H1: one per page, matching the topic, written for people.

Content (checks 5 to 10)

  1. Answer the main question early, in the first paragraph.
  2. Use headings that mirror real questions people ask.
  3. Cover the topic fully: the details, comparisons and examples competitors skip.
  4. Add original value: your process, photos, data, case studies and opinions.
  5. Keep it scannable: short paragraphs, lists and tables.
  6. Show who wrote it and why they know, especially for advice that affects money or health.
  1. Link to related pages with descriptive anchor text, not "click here".
  2. Make sure important pages receive internal links from relevant guides.
  3. Link to authoritative sources where they genuinely help the reader.

Images and media (checks 14 to 16)

  1. Compress and resize images, using WebP or AVIF.
  2. Write descriptive alt text that explains what the image shows.
  3. Set dimensions on images and videos so the layout does not jump.

Technical and AI readiness (checks 17 to 20)

  1. Add structured data that matches the page: Article, Service, Product, FAQ or LocalBusiness.
  2. Check mobile layout and speed with PageSpeed Insights (see our Core Web Vitals guide).
  3. Confirm the page is indexable: no stray noindex tag and a correct canonical.
  4. Add a short answer-first summary that AI assistants can quote, as explained in how to appear in Google AI Overviews.

How do you prioritise pages?

Priority Pages Why
1 Service and product pages Closest to revenue
2 Pages ranking in positions 5 to 20 Small improvements move them onto page one
3 High-traffic guides They pass authority to service pages
4 Everything else Housekeeping

How do you know it worked?

Track rankings, clicks and enquiries for each page you change, using Search Console for impressions and click-through rate, and analytics for conversions. Give changes a few weeks before judging.

Frequently asked questions

What is on-page SEO?

On-page SEO is everything you optimise on the page itself to help it rank: content, headings, title and meta tags, internal links, images, structured data and page experience.

How long should a title tag be?

Roughly 50 to 60 characters, so it is not cut off in search results. Put the main keyword near the start and make it compelling to click.

Do meta descriptions affect rankings?

Not directly, but a clear, persuasive description improves click-through rates, which brings more visitors from the same ranking.

How many internal links should a page have?

Enough to connect it naturally with related pages: usually a few contextual links to important service pages and relevant guides, with descriptive anchor text.
